Every once in a while, a simple idea stays with you.
I recently came across a team-building exercise used by Kevin Stefanski* during his first season as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. During a time when the team was physically apart, he asked players and staff to share their “Four H’s”:
History
Heroes
Heartbreaks
Hopes
It was a way to help people understand one another beyond their roles, positions, and responsibilities.
One quote from Stefanski stood out:
“The question I kept asking was, ‘how do you come together when you're apart?’”
That question feels just as relevant outside of football.
Many of us move through our days knowing what people do, but not always knowing what has shaped them, who has influenced them, what they have moved through, or what they are quietly building toward.
The 4 H’s offer a simple starting point.
Not as a formal exercise.
Not as something that needs to become overly personal.
Not as a way to force a deep conversation.
Just as a thoughtful prompt.
A place to begin.
The 4 H’s
History
What is one experience that shaped how you see the world?
Heroes
Who has influenced the way you live, work, create, care, or serve?
Heartbreaks
What is one disappointment, challenge, or difficult moment that taught you something important?
Hopes
What is something you are looking forward to, building toward, or quietly wishing for?
You do not have to answer all four.
You could choose one.
You could write about it in a journal.
You could ask someone over tea.
You could use it as a conversation starter with a friend, a partner, a colleague, or a small group.
You could simply notice which word draws your attention first.
Sometimes connection does not require a long conversation. Sometimes it begins with one better question — and enough pause to listen to the answer.
A simple way to try it
This week, choose one of the 4 H’s and use it as a quiet prompt.
Ask yourself:
Which part of my history still influences the way I show up today?
Or ask someone else:
Who is one of your heroes, and why?
Or keep it simple:
What is one hope you have for this season of life?
There is no need to turn it into a project.
One question is enough.
One pause is enough.
One thoughtful moment can shift the tone of a conversation, a room, or even the way we move through the rest of the day.
Creating room for thoughtful pause
At My Yoga Room Elements, we often think about the spaces we create — not only physical spaces, but the quieter spaces that happen within daily life.
The space to rest.
The space to reflect.
The space to listen.
The space to reconnect with what matters.
Our artisan-crafted yoga and meditation supports are designed to bring comfort, function, and quiet refinement into everyday wellness spaces — whether that is a dedicated practice room, a corner of the living room, a studio, a classroom, or a simple place to pause.
Because meaningful moments do not always require more.
Sometimes they require a little more room.
And sometimes, they begin with one good question.
A quiet prompt for today:
Choose one of the 4 H’s — History, Heroes, Heartbreaks, or Hopes — and let it guide a few minutes of reflection or conversation.
Then notice what opens from there.
