One of the pleasures of working in a small creative business is meeting other makers who care about what their work means to the person who eventually brings it home.
That is one of the reasons I was drawn to Trisha Flanagan and her jewelry.
Trisha is a Calgary jewelry designer who creates handmade sterling silver pieces, including her signature Morse Code collection.
Her work is thoughtful, personal and quietly expressive, which makes it easy to understand why so many of her pieces are chosen to mark a person, a word, a memory or a moment.
A Message Hidden in Plain Sight
What first caught my attention about Trisha's Morse Code jewelry is the idea behind it.
A word or message is translated into Morse Code, then handcrafted in sterling silver using dots and dashes. The result is a piece that carries a personal message without having to explain itself to anyone else.
That could be a name, an intention, a reminder, or simply a word that means something to the person wearing it.
There is something appealing about that kind of meaning. The jewelry is visible. The message can remain completely private.

Her custom word Morse Code bracelet is a particularly lovely example:

Made by Hand and With Intention
Trisha has spent more than 20 years developing her craft, and her background in art and design is evident in the way she approaches her work.
Each piece is made by hand in Calgary, with attention to proportion, finish and wearability. The result is jewelry that feels personal and considered rather than mass produced.
That part of her work resonates with me.
Although Trisha works in silver and I work in textiles, we both understand what it means to make something in small quantities and to think carefully about how it will be used in everyday life.
A handmade object carries the decisions of the person who made it.
Which material feels right?
How should it sit on the body?
Will it still feel good to use or wear after the novelty has worn off?
Does it have a reason to stay?
Those are questions makers tend to ask, even when our products are very different.
Why This Collaboration Made Sense
On the surface, jewelry and yoga supports may not seem like an obvious pairing.
But the connection became quite clear to me.
Trisha creates pieces that can carry a private message or meaning with you throughout the day.
At My Yoga Room Elements, I create physical supports and reflective resources that can serve as their own quiet reminders to pause, get comfortable, notice what is happening and make a little room for yourself.
Both can become part of everyday life without asking for much attention.
One is worn.
One is used.
Both can hold meaning.
